autograph parallels - base, gold, and platinum

this post covers the autographed parallel cards in the set - both the 'base' and the numbered parallels.  every card in the set has three autographed parallel versions, but because the print runs for the 'base' versions run as low as 25, there are no bronze autographed parallels numbered to 50.  instead, in addition to the base versions, there are the gold versions numbered to 5 and the 1 of 1 platinum versions.  the gold versions have the machine stamp on the back, while the 1 of 1 cards are stamped on the front, inside the 'year shield'.  the 1 of 1 stamps were applied after the cards were signed, which is odd.

the autographs are all on-card, as one of the primary drivers for the development of the set's checklist was having retired players who could physically sign the cards.  beckett doesn't list the standard print run of base autograph parallels, but they do indicate the short prints as follows:

#241 bill buckner

#266 dan petry

#272 bert blyleven

by far the best of these cards, as far as variations go, are the gold memorable moments cards.  i used to consider it one of my great collecting disappointments that i didn't have an autographed gold memorable moments parallel in my collection, but with the addition of the noles card above as of december of 2020, i no longer suffer from the lack of such a card. and now i have the buckner and downing cards, too!

finally, here are the fronts and backs of the 1 of 1 autographed parallel cards that i have in my collection (or, in the case of the bert campaneris, used to have in my collection, as i traded it to fuji a few years back).

#80 bert campaneris

#94 davey lopes

#191 bake mcbride
the mcbride was a personal pack pull in a box that i bought, which was nice.

#200 dusty baker

i don't have a 1 of 1 of an autographed memorable moments card, but they don't look too different from the base cards.  here's an image of carlton fisk's 1 of 1 signed memorable moments card that i found online, for the sake of completeness.

that's a wrap for the set parallel inserts. next up, i'll post some of the dual combo autographs...

Hmmm - no Sox autos available

Wait - NOT ONE WHITE SOX IN THIS SET?

Seriously - wtf? Here are the times not included in the set:

Astros. Braves. Diamondbacks. Giants. Indians. Mariners. Marlins. Nationals. Padres. Rangers. Rays. Rockies. Royals. White Sox.

You can easily argue about the Rockies, Rays, Marlins & D-backs. Plus the Nationals were the Expos at the time. But to exclude my Sox, which were a 103 years old at the time, as well as the Giants (which you could care less about), the Braves, the Indians and possibly the Astros - I think the set is not as high on my list as it might be.

  2. I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum as Jeff. I love, love, love the autograph checklist. Probably because they included autographs of so many of those mid 70's A's players.
